01What changes in Canberra
ACT City Services says a Canberra nature strip is public land and that installing synthetic turf there requires approval. It also explains that lower planting and partly gravelled treatments can retain water filtration and cooling functions. On private land, the ACT’s climate-resilient-city guidance recommends shade, vegetation and water-absorbing ground surfaces to reduce urban heat and runoff.
These are important alternatives and trade-offs, not claims that residential artificial grass is prohibited everywhere. A useful campaign asks whether the customer is replacing living vegetation, how much shade remains and what drainage pathway exists. Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Woden Valley should be targeted according to actual measure capacity, while unit properties need owner and owners-corporation authority checked.
ACT evidence about hot synthetic sports surfaces should not be applied as an exact residential temperature prediction; it supports honest exposure and safe-use questions. Quotes should distinguish turf laying from excavation, retaining, drainage, waterproofing or changes to public land and avoid guaranteeing approval, cooling, stormwater performance or recycling.
